Brace yourselves Facebook games fanatics Contract Wars is here to grab a piece of the pie chart dominated by Counter-Strike. AbsolutSoft, a company founded in 2009, brings you the Facebook version of Contract Wars. At first glance you may think that this is just another Counter-Strike ripoff, think again. Looks could always be deceiving. Contract Wars is a First-Person-Shooter and a Role Playing Game at the same time. Unlike the good old Counter-Strike, your character does level up in Contract Wars as you fight your way through non-stop matches of stray bullets and utter violence that may turn your opponent or character's body into a colander.

Let us dissect the components of this cool game they dubbed Contract Wars starting with

The Daily Bonus

Alas, everybody like to hear the word "BONUS"; and what do you expect from a Facebook game!? Bonus, bonus, and more ridiculous daily bonus. You will like them at first until you realize you are sick and tired of accepting them from your so-called Facebook game buddies.

At the time of writing, Contract Wars does not follow the status quo. With this game, most daily bonus would be real precious to whoever is patronizing this game. There are two common daily bonuses in Contract Wars, the Daily Discount Bonus and The Daily Roll.

The Daily Discounts or Free Rentals

The Daily Roll

This feature may be enjoyed by rich kids or people who frequently use their plastic or real money to purchase Facebook credits and whatnot. If you are this type of gamer, you will find out that some of their offers are irresistible - like 30% discount or more on some random primary or secondary weapons. My "Raging Judge" for instance, I used some Paypal credits to acquire it because at first glance I believed it is a powerful piece of $#!@; in which I am quite correct - this hand-held shotgun packs more stopping power than Manny Pacquiao's left hook. The Daily Roll is quite boring at first glance due to the fact that it is just a simple old fashioned roulette with a digital highlighter that is colored blue (at least on my screen, dunno what it looks like on other monitors - DUH). Everyday, you are given two chances to click on the "ROLL!" button on the bottom of this roulette. Never underestimate this circle, no matter how old fashioned this roulette looks like, it could bring you some in-game fortune from Silver, Gold, Power ups, and even Primary and Secondary weapons and other out of this world surprises.

Weapon Sets and W-TASKS

In Contract Wars you unlock Weapon Sets as you progress. There are 7 Weapon Sets from Weapon Set 01 to Weapon Set 06, then Weapon Set Spec after the Weapon Set 06. Some of these weapons are PM pistol, APS Automatic Pistol, Raging Judge buckshot revolver, PMM-12 pistol, TIS Desert Eagle pistol, Glock 17 DEVGRU pistol, Kedr SMG, H&K MP5k SMG, KAC PDW rfile, IZH-43 shotgun, SV-98 sniper rifle, TKPD Storm carbine, H&K MP5SD6 SMG, AKMS rifle, Mosina sniper rifle, Shpagina SMG, H&K USP pistol, Sig Sauer P226R, Glock 18 automatic pistol, Pump-action shotgun Benelli M3 mod. 2, Bizon-2B SMG, FN SCAR-L rifle, RPK-74 light machinegun, SR3M compact assault rifle, TKPD Sniper carbine, MK14 EBR CQB rifle, Gold-plated AKMS, Colt IAR light machinegun, Springfield Operator TRP pistol, OTs-33 Pernach automatic pistol, USP Match, SR2M Veresk SMG, Magpul PDR-C SMG, H&K 416c rifle, MP-133 pump shotgun, M40A6 sniper rifle, AUG A3 assault rifle, EBR Marksman rifle, DT SRS mk.2 rifle, AS VAL Kobra special assault rifle, HK 417D assault rifle, Beretta 90two pistol, Colt Python Elite revolver, Skorpion EVO SMG, Keltec RFB carbine, Saiga 12K semi-automatic shotgun, and a lot more.

Most of the weapons in Contract Wars has its corresponding W-TASKS (stands for Weapon Tasks). Completing a W-TASKS should upgrade the weapon that corresponds the said W-TASKS. The SR2M Verserk SMG weapon for instance, if used to make 5 Triplekills, will be upgraded with a red dot scope Micro H1 and a Silencer. You can access these weapon sets by either achieving a higher level or paying for them using your hard earned money!

The Role Playing Game Factor

By distributing your SP (Skill Points most probably), this game from AbsolutSoft allows you to choose specialization(s) or class. Your character can be a mixed or pure Careerist, Scout, Assaulter, Destroyer, Sniper, Gunsmith.

Achievements, Clans, and Statistics

Every time you make some kind of amazing feats like achieving 600 kills with shotguns or 300 kills with knife, a corresponding badge and its corresponding CR (Credits) reward. These badges can be useful for bragging rights among hardcore gamer and clan members, or sometimes used by clan officials to whether to welcome you (or not) in their clans. Did I wrote clans? Yes, you are right. In AbsolutSoft's Contract Wars, you may create or join a clan for whatever purpose you have.

At the time of writing, this game has three clan plans that you can take advantage of - of course, if you want to actually create one for you or your so-called friends. These three clan plans are quite pricey for someone like me who is a certified hobo gamer. I definitely understand that game companies such as AbsolutSoft should earn too, and I do not discourage hardcore gamer from creating clans of their own - especially if they have the money to pay for it. Besides, this type of game can be more enjoyable if you have gaming buddies to brag your achievements.

200 GP (Gold Points) is roughly priced $6 if my computation serves me right and the clan packages goes:
  • Basic clan cost 200GP and can accommodate a maximum of 10 contractors / players.
  • Extended clan cost 500GP and can accommodate a maximum of 20 contractors / players.
  • Premium clan cost 1000GP and can accommodate a maximum of 50 contractors / players.
Furthermore, your gaming statistics are also shown on one portion so other gamer will know more about your information in case your rank skyrockets. The STATISTICS portion shows the total number of hours you are online, hardcore time, you wins and defeats, your total damage given, how many ammo you have used, how many headshots or double headshots, longshots, doublekills, triplekills, and so on up to the number of matches you have played. You cannot make up stories as the system records every in-game details. Contract Wars is definitely not a game for story-tellers.

Weapon Selection Kits

The in-game description for this feature goes, "A new kit of equipment allows you to keep the choice of weapons. During the fight you can only change saved weapon kits.". You can have a maximum of 5 in-game as of writing. With these WEAPON SELECTION KITS feature, your character is able to change its primary and secondary weapons while in the middle of the game. I have 3 of these I believe, just for 50 GP per kit. Something that a hobo gamer like me can afford bwahaha.
You will see the WEAPONS SELECTION KITS on the lower left part on the screenshot on the right.

In-game controls and Video / Audio settings and Help system

If you have been into first person shooters before, transitioning to Contract Wars will be a "two-meter walk" - that is if you know how to walk. Just the same as the good old "W, A, S, D - feel" days when you use to own your first person shooter opponents. Your Spacebar still holds the right to let your character jump, R for reload, C for crouch, and so on. Just like most first person shooters, you are able to adjust the mouse sensitivity to suit your preference. Nothing fancy.
2560 by 1600 can be set as the maximum screen resolution for this game along with features such as; Texture quality, Shadow quality, Physics quality, Shadow radius, Small object draw radius, Optimized characters, maxQueuedFrames, Overall volume, SoundFX volume, Radio volume. Same usual features to expect on a first person shooter and other video games with cool graphics.
Contract Wars has a built-in Help system which has a very straightforward design, so simple that even a moron like me took no time to grasp.

Weapon 3D View

Another cool feature this game has in its store for you is the "Weapon 3D View". This feature allows you to view all the in-game weapons in 3D along with information on which company manufactured the weapon, where it was derived from, the year it was manufactured, and many more. Information that may partly satiate some aspect of a weapon lover's appetite. Moving the mouse cursor while holding the left mouse button should allow you to check your weapon details in 3D view.

Loading Screens

In Contract Wars, the loading screens are not that bad to look at. A circular animation on the lower part shows you how much of the whole game's percentage is loaded, along with some in-game tips. Summary of Contract Wars story are also shown from time to time. A few more moments and it will show you the "READY!" button if everything is loaded properly; this gives you a bit of time to condition yourself and begin the game in your own pace.

The Gameplay and Backstory

No offense to Contract Wars fans out there but you would have to agree that most first person shooters such as Contract Wars can only be enjoyed if you have someone to share your laughter and annoying psycho tactics. Unless you take pride in every first person shooter that you play, taking these games seriously (alone) without sharing the whole enchilada with your friends could end you in a mental institution if you do not have a strong mind like that of Yuri in the Command & Conquer series. Graphics is good, I enjoyed playing Contract Wars to the extent that I have used my Paypal to purchase some items, but this is not the kind of game that you may want to play repeatedly on a daily basis - unless (as I was saying) you got some friends whom you can share the whole action with. It's the same old Counter-Strike feeling without the need to install a 400++ MB installer. If you want to play this game make sure you already have a Facebook account; then just click this "Contract Wars" words and it should take you to Facebook. You may need to install Unity Web Player if you do not have it yet.
Just so you know, this game has a backstory way back when this was still enjoyed in Mother Russia. Take note that the words "Mother Russia" should be pronounced with Russian accent to add more effect. Going back to the backstory, it is available at Kongregate's forums. The backstory was translated by someone who goes by the codename "Nqss".
